Kenya's opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa) supporters returned to the streets on Friday in efforts to push for reforms at the electoral commission ahead of the repeat presidential poll slated for October 26.
They staged protests in the capital Nairobi, Kisumu and Kakamega in western Kenya, and at the coastal city of Mombasa.
Nasa leaders, led by presidential candidate Raila Odinga, have called for demos twice a week — on Mondays and Fridays — demanding changes at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) including the firing of its CEO Ezra Chiloba and 10 other officials accused of bungling August 8 election.
Kisumu
In Kisumu, a port city on Lake Victoria, transport was paralysed as youth lit bonfires and barricaded roads using rocks and burning tyres.
Business was also brought to a standstill after some protestors broke into a supermarket in the central business district and looted.
They also destroyed water lines in the city centre, forcing the utility provider Kiwasco to cut supply to estates.
Similar demos were held in Homa Bay, a town on the south shore of Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria.
