The Opec Fund for International Development is considering a €150 million ($168.5 million) loan for Uganda to put its Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project back on track, offering fresh momentum to Kampala’s efforts to close funding gaps delaying the $3 billion Malaba-Kampala line.

But financial close has slipped to January 2027, indicating the challenges of assembling the financing package worth about €2.7 billion ($3.03 billion).
