Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Monday’s election, in which his Prosperity Party is expected to retain power, marks a turning point for a country seeking to move beyond years of conflict and political upheaval.

Speaking after casting his ballot in Addis Ababa, Dr Abiy said the election would strengthen political legitimacy and help Ethiopia take greater control of its affairs, overcoming what he described as the country's “historical enemies”.
