The United Kingdom is seeking to dismiss Rwanda’s claim of unpaid $134 million (£100 million) under their terminated asylum partnership agreement, arguing that Kigali’s case is driven by anger over London’s sanctions linked to the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In its defence statement filed in the case before the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, UK’s legal adviser, Tamsin Stubbing, said the timing of the claim points to motives beyond the dispute over unpaid funds.
