We are in the middle of a potentially eventful month in our country’s political calendar, and the various constituencies are shaping up to rendezvous with October 29, the anniversary of that tragic day around which more than 500 Tanzanians (according to authorities) were shot down by security forces.
It is the first time such mass killings have happened in this country, and everyone has the right (and duty) to recognise the date as significant. The commission appointed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to investigate the events of last October (the so-called Chande Commission) has suggested that the date be memorialised, no doubt so that the nation may always remember the heavy loss it suffered, and work toward the healing and the reconciliation requisite in the circomstances.
