Ethiopia has announced that the filling of its mega dam on the River Nile, the Grand Renaissance Dam (Gerd), is nearly complete and will be opened formally this coming week.

Egypt is furious, warning, once again, that the Gerd threatens its very existence by disrupting its water supply. As a desert nation, Egypt depends on the Nile for about 95 percent of its freshwater. Hardliners close to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi have even threatened to bomb the dam.
