Across Africa, you see a striking picture. Some of the youngest populations in the world are ruled by men well into their eighties and nineties. Headlines tell the story every week. A few days ago, there was another one: “Africa’s oldest leaders are governing the world’s youngest populations.”

Africans often joke about it, but the reality bites harder each year, as the age gap has become a chasm. Still, there’s something off in this story.
