A dangerous mix of climate extremes, declining soil fertility and soaring market costs, is pushing East Africa towards a prolonged food crisis, with experts warning that the effects could be felt well into 2027 and beyond.
Grain prices are already climbing sharply in several countries, crop failures are mounting in key farming zones of Kenya and Uganda, and forecasters say a strong El Niño expected later this year could deepen shortages through floods, droughts and further disruptions to food production.
