UNEP: East Africa trade corridor emerges as major emissions source
Cargo handled through the Port of Mombasa, the gateway for the corridor, is projected to reach 50 million tonnes this year, increasing the number of heavy-duty trucks transporting goods along the Northern Corridor.
East Africa’s busiest trade corridor is becoming a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, potentially signalling the need for governments to place environmental safeguards in logistics and regional commerce.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that as more cargo flows over the corridor, transporters have not adjusted their energy transition, with many still using diesel trucks and committing less on green revolution.
