Comesa extends Sindiso Ngwenya’s mandate

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) has extended the contract of its secretary-general Sindiso Ngwenya until his successor is sworn-in.

This will see Mr Ngwenya remain in office for about three weeks after his second and final term lapses on June 30.

“The extension of the secretary-general’s mandate is in the interest of ensuring the continuity of Comesa’s activities especially so as the Secretariat prepares to host its 20th Summit in Lusaka, Zambia from July 9 – 19, 2018,” a statement by Comesa chairman, President Hery Rajaonarimampianina of Madagascar read.

The new secretary-general is expected to be appointed and sworn-in during the Summit following the completion of the recruitment process.

The name of the successful candidate will be submitted to the Comesa Council of Ministers for endorsement and subsequently to the Heads of State and Government attending the Summit, for appointment and swearing-in.

The secretary-general is the chief executive of Comesa and serves for a maximum of two five-year terms.
