Long before the current crisis in the Middle East pitting the US and Israel against Iran, the biggest threats to maritime security in Eastern Africa were piracy, drug trafficking, and illegal fishing. As tensions escalate, the safety of shipping routes has become even more urgent.

A fleet of French warships left Mombasa on Monday, having completed a four-day mission meant to prepare forces of both sides on the problem of sea crimes.
