Four once influential members of Tanzania's main opposition Chadema have formally quit the party in what could be the beginning of an exodus ahead of this year's general election.

Chadema is battling resistance from within and without to its campaign for substantial electoral reforms to ensure a fair vote, as a result of which it has been barred from contesting altogether and its leader, Tundu Lissu, placed behind bars indefinitely on controversial charges of treason and publishing false information.
