Abdirahman Nur left camel herding as a young man several years after the collapse of Gen Mohamed Siad Barre’s government in Somalia. It was in the late 1990s.

In Mogadishu, he became familiar with two different Somali shilling notes, respectively known as Baalwayn and Na. Baalwayn notes were printed by the Central Bank of Somalia and circulated during the government of Barre that collapsed in January 1991. Na notes had been ordered but were delivered only after Barre was forced out of Mogadishu.
