Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi has agreed to convene a national dialogue after months of pressure from the opposition, repeated appeals by religious leaders, and calls from former president Joseph Kabila and the AFC/M23 rebels.
The announcement, made on July 17 after a meeting with the country’s main religious leaders, marks a significant political shift. For the first time since the current security crisis began, the Congolese head of state has formally accepted the principle of talks among the “sons and daughters of Congo.”
