East African Community (EAC) member states are returning to the search for common ground in basic education, with plans to establish a regional Basic Education Council to tackle persistent learning gaps and ensure children across the bloc acquire essential literacy, numeracy and other foundational skills.
The proposal is contained in a communiqué of the second EAC Regional Education Conference that concluded in Nairobi on Monday, which brought together more than 600 education stakeholders to assess progress since the bloc’s inaugural conference in Arusha, Tanzania, in 2024.
