The United Nations has begun laying off staff and preparing to sell mission assets in Somalia as a deepening funding crisis threatens the logistical backbone of the country's international security operation.
Ten civilian employees of the African Union-United Nations Information Support Team (AU-UN IST) have been notified that their contracts will end by September 10, while the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (Unsos) has launched plans to auction equipment ranging from vehicles and heavy machinery to IT and medical assets.
