South Sudan marks another Independence Day without celebration
South Sudanese mark Independence Day at the John Garang Mausoleum grounds in Juba on July 9, 2015. Due to challenges including economic turmoil and civil conflict, the country has held few official Independence Day celebrations.
South Sudan celebrated its 14th Independence Day on Wednesday without official fanfare, reflecting the mounting political and economic problems for the country since 2011.
The last official independence event was held in 2014. Recurring economic difficulties, political unrest, and infighting among senior politicians since the civil war that erupted in December 2013 have forced the cancellation of the celebrations.
