African countries may soon face a difficult diplomatic choice between defending the International Criminal Court (ICC) and aligning with Washington after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would urge its allies to withdraw from the Rome Statute, accusing the court of unfairly targeting American citizens and interests.

“The International Criminal Court seeks to become the unaccountable arbiter of a new global law, empowered to prosecute and arrest our citizens at will and existentially threaten American sovereignty. We will teach the ICC the full meaning of American resolve,” Mr Rubio said in a video statement.
