The East African Community (EAC) Secretariat is facing an existential crisis. Some member states have failed to remit annual subscription fees for years, with arrears adding up to $89 million.

Only Kenya and Tanzania are up to date with their contributions. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the biggest defaulter, with $27 million unpaid, followed by Burundi ($22.7 million), South Sudan ($21.8 million), Somalia ($10.5 million), Rwanda ($5.2 million) and Uganda ($1.1 million).
