African technology and policy experts are seeking a proper role for the continent in regulating artificial intelligence, warning that rules and systems designed elsewhere risk excluding African languages, political realities and development priorities.

At the Summit on People Centred Technologies in Africa in Nairobi this week, speakers called for Africans to help set the standards governing AI, exercise greater control over their data and infrastructure, and ensure the technology addresses the continent's needs rather than merely serving users as a product built abroad.
