The African Union (AU) has tied South Sudan’s elections to the release of suspended First Vice-President Riek Machar, warning that his freedom is critical for credible polls scheduled for December 2026.

The stance supports the regional bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad), which mediated the 2018 peace deal that delivered relative stability during the transition.
