You can’t make this stuff up. Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation after allegations emerged that a wholly fictitious government agency was set up within his own office and received public funding of about $950,000. A forged letter from the president’s chief of staff supposedly created the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who styled himself “director general” of the PFIPC, is now on the run as police close in. Adeyemi claims the council was formed in 2024 to attract foreign investment, but there is no record of deals. The BBC reports that his fake organisation opened bank accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria and even appeared in the 2026 Appropriation Act with a $950,000 allocation.
