The fact that accurate diagnosis can only be obtained in high-level facilities is concerning to public health experts.

A few days after an evening of merrymaking with his friends, Brian Juma* noticed lesions on his skin which later became painful. Concerned, he rushed to a health centre where a clinician gave him ointments.

“They told me the lesions would fade; they did not,” Juma said.
