Nyabongo: Man from TV who became the King of Tooro
King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo 1 of the Tooro Kingdom, the 13th monarch of the Batooro people, on his throne, on the day of his coronation at the Karuziika palace, Fort Portal, Uganda on September 29, 2026.
The royal drums at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, western Uganda, sounded again on September 29, 2026, announcing the beginning of a new era in Tooro Kingdom, nearly a month after they had fallen silent. At about 10pm on August 27, 2026, the Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) announced the sad news of the passing of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The king — who gained popularity for being the youngest to be crowned in 1995, at only three years old, after the death of his father, Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III — had died while receiving treatment in the US.
