South Sudan’s interparty dialogue kicked off to a slow start, with a section of the opposition snubbing the talks, citing President Salva Kiir’s unilateral decisions and the continued “persecution” of opposition supremo Riek Machar, who is on trial for alleged treason.
Launched in Juba by President Salva Kiir on September 24, 2026, following the dissolution of the transitional government, the dialogue was billed as a critical platform to build consensus and prepare for the country’s first general election on December 22. However, a section of the opposition has dismissed the forum as a unilateral move by Kiir’s government.
