Puntland authorities on Thursday said they had repelled a militia group attempting to free piracy suspects, the latest sign of links between maritime crime and armed groups in Somalia.
A group of armed men attacked a police station in the port town of Garacad, near where pirates hijacked the fertiliser vessel MV Sward. Officials said a heavy exchange of fire ensued between the assailants and police units.
