Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea have been identified as countries where human traffickers thrive, using dangerous routes to facilitate illegal migration.

According to data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), illegal labour migration along the Eastern Route -- Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia and Yemen -- increased during the first eight months of 2025.
