East Africa is stepping up efforts to clean up its busiest trade route as rising cargo volumes and thousands of diesel-powered trucks put increasing pressure on the environment, transport costs and road infrastructure.
About 75,000 tonnes of cargo move on the Northern Corridor every day on 2,000 to 3,000 trucks, according to the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA), making road freight a significant and growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the region.
