President Samia Suluhu Hassan will begin a state visit to Russia on Thursday in a trip that could test Tanzania’s long-standing non-alignment policy amid continuing Western concerns over governance and last year’s disputed general election.

The visit will be only the second by a Tanzanian head of state to Moscow since independence, following Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s trip in 1969 during the Cold War.
