Calls for reparative justice echo desire to right historical wrongs
African heads of state and delegates attend the opening of the 38th Ordinary Session of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union at the African Union Commission (AUC) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on February 15, 2025.
The African Union (AU) just concluded its mid-year coordination meeting in Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), where the AU Champion for Reparations, Ghana’s President Mahama termed the continent’s call for reparative justice “a unified demand grounded in historical truth, moral clarity and an unwavering commitment to dignity”.
The meeting reviewed progress on the AU’s 2025 theme on “Justice for African and People of African Descent through Reparations” and lauded the recent commitment to extend the focus on the reparations theme from one year, to a decade (2026-2036), giving ample time and opportunity to rally efforts and resources to pursue the theme comprehensively.
