Tanzania has brought forward the closure of pre-primary, primary and secondary schools by three weeks, as the government steps up preparations for the potentially destructive El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to hit between October and December.

Schools across Mainland Tanzania will now close on November 13, instead of December 4 as provided for in the 2026 academic calendar, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said.
