The first annniversary of Kenya’s Gen-Z digital revolt has shaken Africa’s table

Kenya’s uprising inspired smaller protests across the continent, including Uganda, Ghana, and Nigeria’s #EndBadGovernance campaign in August 2024.

On June 25, 2025, Kenya’s Generation Z flooded the streets of Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, waving smartphone screens and chanting protest anthems to mark the first anniversary of their revolt against the punitive 2024 Finance Bill.

They opposed tax hikes, arguing that they would affect a generation already grappling with an estimated 67 percent youth unemployment rate.
