Unfinished revolution: There were Soweto kids, now we have Gen Z
Kenyan protesters participate in a demonstration marking the first anniversary of the 2024 anti-government protests, which drew widespread condemnation over the use of force by security agencies, in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 25, 2025.
As I type this, I am listening to a news report about the protests in Nairobi and throughout the country, which are being led by Gen-Z Kenyans. These June protests were held to mark a year since they started protesting, and the number of young Kenyans who have died at the hand of the state is only increasing with time. Yet they remain undeterred.
On June 16, 1976, school children in Soweto gathered to protest the poor quality of their education, among other things. They were on the streets to claim their rights, and the Apartheid government shot at them using live ammunition.
