Africa’s social contract has collapsed. Now what?

Last week in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the African Union’s Ecosocc Citizens’ Forum brought together civil society actors, researchers, and policymakers under the theme “Reimagining Democracy and Advancing Reparative Justice: A New Social Contract.”

The forum, framed within the AU’s broader designation of 2025 as the Year of Justice and Reparations, marked a rare continental moment of introspection, one that acknowledged that today’s crises cannot be addressed through reforms alone.
