Kenyan Treasury struggles with $18bn pensions bill

‎Kenya will use a staggering Ksh2.4 trillion ($18.6 billion) to pay some 300,000 public service retirees, according to the National Treasury, reflecting the monumental burden on the country's national budget.

‎‎The latest disclosures on public pension liability are part of the ongoing valuation of public assets and liabilities, as the government transitions from cash-based to accrual system of accounting. The valuation began on July 1, 2026.
